The Holy Cross baseball team defeated the University nine at Worcester on Saturday in a closely contested game by the score of 2 to 1. The team played a hard, clean game, the defeat being largely due to two costly errors by Stephenson and Coolidge, and to the excellent Fielding of the Holy Cross outfield. Only one member of the team struck out during the entire game and ten outfield hits were made, many of which offered difficult chances.
The fielding was also much better than in the Brown game and was characterized throughout by fast throwing and accuracy in handling grounders. Two of the three errors made, however, were very costly. In the first inning Stephenson misjudged a long fly, letting in a run, and in the fourth inning Coolidge dropped an easy infield fly, the batsman reaching first and scoring later in the inning.
Clarkson pitched steadily and although allowing four hits gave but one base on balls, and struck out seven men. R. P. Kernan played a spirited game up to the fifth inning. When he retired on account of a slight injury to his leg. He was replaced b Quigley, whose work through the remaining part of the game showed considerable promise.
The scoring began in the first inning when Baldwin reached first on a fielder's choice and scored on Stephenson's fumble of S tankard's long fly. The score was tied in the third inning by Randall, who made a long drive to right centre for three bases, ad came home on a single by Matthews. In the next inning, however, Mckeon reached first on Coolidge's error, stole second, reached third on a ground ball by Devlin, and scored on Flynn's outfield fly. Neither side scored after this.
