UNPROMISING WORK.

In the secret practice of the University football team yesterday afternoon, no preliminary work was given other than an unusually long signal drill to better the running-off of plays. The line-up against the second eleven was again long, lasting over 30 minutes. The University team scored five touchdowns, but this was due in a measure to the fact that the ball was several times arbitrarily given to the University team for the purpose of developing a stronger offense. The second eleven was as a whole not very strong, but was several times able to hold the University team for downs. The worst feature of the practice was the extraordinary amount of fumbling, due largely to poor passing by Parkinson. Brill was frequently brought back of the line from tackle to carry the ball, rushing for good gains. Kerans, who played quarterback on the second eleven, made two brilliant diving tackles during the scrimmage. Hurley was on the field but is not yet in condition to go into the line-up.

The second eleven kicked off to Squires, who ran the ball in to the 30-yard line. From here the University team, aided by two penalties imposed on the second eleven, one for interference and one for off-side play, rushed down the field with long gains until Starr finally went over for a touchdown. Wendell fumbled the second kick-off for the University team, but recovering the ball advanced it from the 3 to the 22-yard line. On the next play Sperry made a gain of 35 yards on an end run. The second eleven held for downs on their own 30-yard line, but the University team was allowed to keep the ball. Sperry punted to Kerans, who fumbled, and Randall fell on the ball for the University team on the second's 9-yard line. From here Wendell went over for the second touchdown. The last three scores were made by Wendell, Sperry and Mills respectively, after the ball had been carried each time from the centre of the field by short line attacks.
