Professor L. J. Johnson '87, of the civil engineering department, will speak under the auspices of the Engineering Society in Pierce 110 this evening at 8 o'clock on "Experiments on the Weight of Crowds of People."
Professor Johnson will describe some experiments by which he has recently proved that the weight of 80 to 100 pounds per square foot given by authorities as the maximum weight of a crowd of people on a floor or bridge, is an error, and that a weight of 181 pounds per square foot may be reached. The lecture will be illustrated by stereopticon views and will be open to all members of the University.
