LONG SECRET PRACTICE

New Plays for West Point Game.--Goals From Placement In Short Line-Up

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

There was no scrimmage for the University football squad yesterday afternoon, but instead the first team had secret practice of over an hour's duration, in which a great deal of attention was given to open plays, such as the onside kick and the forward pass. Besides this a part of the time was devoted to practice of a few new plays for the West Point game next Saturday.

While the second team was having a long practice scrimmage, in which the forward pass and the onside kick played a prominent part, the following men practiced punting, drop kicking and place kicking: Burnham, Hall, Kennard, Macdonald, Miller, Parker and Tweed. Later Starr gave the ends a short practice in running down under punts.

After the secret practice the first eleven lined up against a team of substitutes for further work on the forward pass and other open plays. In this work there was no attempt at a regular scrimmage. The team seems to have acquired a fair amount of confidence in the use of the open plays, and in consequence they work out to better advantage, as was seen in the Springfield game last Saturday. Toward the end of this work Coach Reid and Burr tried several goals from placement behind the line of scrimmage with rather poor success, the ball being blocked nearly every time. The whole squad ran a lap around the field.

This afternoon, after a short period of secret work, there will be the usual long open practice.
