Mr. Jacob August Riis will lecture on "The Battle with the Slum" in the Living Room of the Union this evening at 8 o'clock.
Mr. Riis is an authority on this phase of the social question in America. He was born in Denmark, but came to this country when a young man and became police reporter for the New York Sun. Since then he has been active in the movement for establishing small parks and playgrounds within city limits, and has been instrumental in many movements toward tenement house and school reforms. During the years 1896 and 1897, Mr. Riis was one of the executive officers of the Good Government Clubs, and in 1897 was secretary of the New York Small Parks Commission. He has written a number of books and magazine articles on these subjects, among the best known of which are, "How the Other Half Lives," "The Battle with the Slum," and "The Peril and the Preservation of the Home."
The lecture will be open only to members of the Union.
