‘The Architect of the Whole Plan’: Harvard Law Graduate Ken Chesebro’s Path to Jan. 6
For the past three weeks a large squad of candidates for the University baseball team has been holding daily practice in the Cage under the direction of Captain Dexter and Coach Pieper. Owing to the large number of candidates the men are obliged to work in two divisions. Thus far, the practice has been confined to the rudimentary work. The battery candidates reported a week earlier than the main squad in order to limber up the pitchers and avoid as much arm-sore-ness as possible. Nothing has been attempted with the pitchers except to teach them as much control as possible. Some of them have good speed; but the raw weather makes it impossible for them to work out their arms thoroughly and thus give an idea of what they are worth.
Everyone has been given batting practice, but the pitchers have used nothing but straight balls and moderate speed. The batting, considering the poor light afforded in the Cage, has been encouraging. Most of the men time the ball fairly well, but there is still a marked tendency to pull away from the plate. The fielders have had nothing but straight grounders to handle and are fairly accurate, but their throwing is still very erratic.
Next week more detailed work, such as sliding bases, pivot plays, and running men between bases will be started.
