Successful Fencing Tournament

The closed novice fencing tournament, held in the fencing room of the Gymnasium last night, was won by J. A. McLaughlin '11. H. A. Erhard '10 was second, and C. E. Tilton '08 third. There were 11 entries in all; two of the men, however, defaulted. The preliminary round was divided into three sections, which were won by Erhard, McLauglin and Tilton respectively. The three then fenced a round-robin, McLaughlin defeating Erhard and Tilton, and Erhard defeating Tilton.

The bouts were four minutes each, and the contestants, in general, were well-matched. The best bout of the evening was that between McLaughlin and Erhard for first place. Erhard successfully parried McLaughlin's thrusts for a time, but did not have a sufficiently varied attack with which to supplement his defense, and the latter won. Cups were awarded the winners by the Fencers' Club. The judges were C. A. Bliss '08, G. L. Cutting '09, and H. W. Holmes '03.
