INDIVIDUALISM NECESSARY

For Development in the U. S.--Diametrically Opposed to Socialism.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Hon. Henry Clews, LL.D., the well-known banker, orator, and author of financial works, lectured in the Living Room of the Union last evening on "Individualism." His belief is that individualism is the foundation feature of our government and economic system, and the origin of our prosperity. Individualism is directly opposed to socialism, and is superior in every sense.

Mr. Clews opened his address by showing that we are all individualists, not socialists, since we strive for education to benefit ourselves, and train ourselves to win. In the individual effort of men of talent, success and fame are secured. Harvard stands pre-eminently in the business world for individualism. Therefore it is watched closely by the prominent men of the country.

The system of individualism advocated is based on common sense and justice, and is not extreme, for an extreme system does not exist. In economics and politics it has a distinct meaning, a theory favoring non-interference of the State in the affairs of individuals. It is also defined as the private ownership of the means of production and distribution where competition is possible.

The issue between socialism and individualism is that the socialist considers competition not beneficial but harmful.

The fact is established that whenever men as individuals are free to work, to earn, and to save and use their earnings as they deem fit, the capable everywhere tend to rise to prosperity. Skillful men are always in demand at good wages. Thus as the moral side is also developed by individualism and competition, the strongest characters are secured.

Individual competition has done more than anything else to make the nation what it is. Socialism is self-contradictory and opposed to deep-rooted and ineradicable human instincts. If everything is accessible to all, why should man strive for something that will not be remunerative to him? Each is proud of his own skill, knowledge, and ability. Socialism in the United States would drive those of superior qualities out of the country, to where such qualities would have a free chance.

Our fathers came here to establish religious freedom; fought for political freedom; and sacrificed a million lives for race freedom; we should certainly stand for industrial and social freedom.

Turning from the discussion of socialism as a whole, Mr. Clews spoke of that particular branch of socialistic program known as municipal ownership. In the United States the political system is so different from that of other nations that socialism is precluded. All has been accomplished by the individual effort of her citizens. Socialism would mean unlimited graft and corruption in our polities.

Individualism has stood the tests of time and experience, and fairly judged by its magnificent results means prosperity and happiness for the future.
