In the first round of the Massachusetts Singles lawn tennis championship, which opened on the courts of the Longwood Cricket Club last Saturday N. W. Niles '09, the intercollegiate champion, defeated C. A. Chase, 6-2, 6-3; P. T. Large, Jr., '10 lost to F. B. Taylor, 6-4, 6-3; A. Sweetser '11 was defeated by F. J. Sulloway, 6-0, 6-2; and H. S. Appleton '10 was beaten by J. O'Shea, 6-1, 6-1. In the second round A. M. Hyde '12 was defeated by A. W. Blakemore, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2; L. S. Grinnell '12 lost to R. A. Garrison, 6-1, 6-1; and F. H. Burr '09 defeated G. C. Adams '10, 6-0, 8-10, 6-3. A. S. Dabney, Jr., '09 won from D. S. Niles, 6-1, 6-2, and W. B. Fraser-Campbell '11 beat W. M. Whiting, Jr., 6-3, 6-3.
In the third round two of the three matches played were won by University players. F. H. Burr '09 beat T. B. Plimpton, 8-6, 6-2, and A. S. Dabney, Jr., '09 won from W. B. Fraser-Campbell '11, 6-3, 6-2.
