CORNELL EASILY DEFEATED

By Score of 8 to 1.--Harvard Won in First Inning by Heavy Hitting

Cornell barely escaped a shutout on Soldiers Field on Saturday afternoon, Harvard winning by the score of 8 to 1. The University team won wholly on its merits, and made a very good showing both in the field and at the bat.

In the first inning of the game, 11 men of the home team were at bat, and five runs came in, three men being left on bases at the end of the inning. Then Carvahar was substituted for Goodwillie in the box for Cornell, and Harvard scored three more runs in the next two innings by hard hitting. After that Carvahar improved, and aided by better support than at the start of the game he managed to prevent any more runs.

In the ninth inning, McLaughlin seemed to let up a little in his pitching. Thompson hit past first base, Minot failing to try for an out at first, though the play seemed possible. Watson flied out to Rogers, but Judson, batting for Carvahar, was passed, putting Thompson on second, and after Howard had flied out, Thompson scored from second by exceptionally fast running on Owen's infield hit to Lanigan, the throw from third to first and from first to the home plate being a bit slow. Judson reached third on this play but Matchneer sent a grounder to Marshall for a third out.

Rogers opened the game for Harvard with a single to right field, but was caught stealing. McLaughlin was passed, Hicks hit a liner to Owen who fumbled, and Potter got a two-base hit into left field scoring two runs. Minot was safe on Howard's high throw over first, allowing Potter to score from second and Minot to reach second base. Lanigan singled to right field scoring Minot, and Marshall hit safely inside first base, scoring Lanigan. Young was passed, Babson fanned, Rogers beat out an infield rap, and McLaughlin closed the inning with a grounder to Howard.

In the next inning, Potter opened with a single into right field, and scored on Minot's triple between centre and left. Hicks having fanned for a first out, Minot was caught at third by the old trick of the concealed ball, and Lanigan raised a fly to Matchneer.

In the third inning Marshall was out on a grounder, but Young, Babson, Rogers, and McLaughlin in succession hit safely, scoring two runs. Rogers's hit was another infield grounder, which he beat out to first base though it was handled cleanly by the Cornell players.

The team will meet Dartmouth on Wednesday and Fordham on Saturday.
