SWIMMING TEAM PROSPECTS

Excellent Material Has Been Developed Since Practice Started in Y. M. C. A. Tank.

Great enthusiasm has been shown by the men interested in the formation of a University swimming team and, until the first cut was made at the beginning of the mid-year period, about 60 men reported at the Cambridge Y. M. C. A. tank every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. About 35 men have been retained; and in case the team receives the sanction of the Athletic Committee, meets will be arranged with the Yale, Princeton, Pennsylvania, and Andover teams.

Of the present squad, 15 are candidates for the Freshman team and have shown up remarkably well in practice. The relay team is especially fast and would be a strong contender for the intercollegiate championship. The most promising of the candidates are: W. H. Claflin, A. C. Cox, M. J. Logan, D. R. Sigourney, and F. B. Withington. Withington and Sigourney have also done fast trials for the 50-yard dash, and Cox has done well in the distance plunge.

For the University team, the most promising candidates are: C. F. Brooks '12, W. C. Codman '12, A. B. Day '13, J. R. Desha '12, H. R. Hitchcock '14, W. H. Hoogs '14, D. Lawson '13, B. Pitman '12, and J. Wentworth '14 in the 50 and 100-yard dashes, and W. J. Ball '13, N. Curtis '14, and H. R. Hitchcock '14 in the distance plunge. The majority of the candidates have been playing water polo but a first team has not yet been selected.

Besides practising three nights a week in the tank the men have taken long runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Time trials in all the events will be held in the Cambridge Y. M. C. A. tank on Monday afternoon at 4.30 o'clock, and an informal meet has been arranged with the Waltham Swimming Club for the evening of February 5.
