TAFT RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT

REPUBLICAN ADMINISTRATION TRIUMPHS, WITH DEMOCRATS SECOND CHOICE.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In the preferential straw vote held yesterday in the Cambridge departments of the University, William Howard Taft h.'02 was re-elected President of the United States. Under the preferential system used, there being no majority in first choices, the firsts and seconds were added together, which gave Taft a majority of the total number of ballots cast and thereby elected him. The working of preferential voting may be seen by the fact that although Roosevelt led Wilson in first choices, 488 to 432, the total number of first and second choices for Wilson was 918 to Roosevelt's 760. Wilson therefore obtained second place while Roosevelt came in third.

The vote cast at Austin Hall was as follows:   First  Second  Others Bryan  5  7  21 Clark.  9  25  36 Cummins  5  7  26 Debs  4  7  7 Foss  3  1  3 Harmon  21  58  61 Hughes  23  38  20 La Follette  24  54  51 Roosevelt  66  54  35 Taft  268  63  47 Underwood  19  78  53 Wilson  157  129  66
