Mr. H. Roswell Bates of New York City will speak on the "New York Underworld" in the Living Room of the Union this evening at 8 o'clock. Mr. Bates is the head of the Spring Street Mission in the middle of the settlement district of New York. During his many years of active service he has come in direct touch with the life there and has acquired an intimate knowledge of the people and the conditions under which they live.
Many members of the University are acquainted with Mr. Bates; he has lectured at many preparatory schools in this part of the country and has always been enthusiastically received. His lectures at Yale and Princeton this winter were considered of remarkable interest. Only members of the Union will be admitted this evening.
