The first Advocate smoker was held in the Sanctum on the top floor of the Union last night. Fifty-six candidates reported for the business and literary competitions. W. A. Norris '18, president of the Poetry Society, explained what sort of verse the Advocate desired, and Mr. E. N. Vallandigham, who has had extensive experience in newspaper and magazine work, addressed the candidates on "The Art of Writing English." R. N. Cram '17, president of the Advocate, outlined the conditions for the prize of $25 which the paper is offering for the best short story based on some phase of college life, written by any member of the University, graduate or undergraduate.
