1919 TRACK PROSPECTS GOOD

Individual Stars Form Nucleus Around Which Well-Rounded Team Should be Built Up.

The prospects for a successful Freshman track team this spring are unusually bright. Although the material as a whole needs considerable developing and training, there are a number of individual stars of considerable promise. J. D. Hutchinson '19 will be the mainstay in the mile. He is a runner of exceptional ability and not only captained a successful cross-country team this fall, but won the B. A. A. interscholastic mile from a large field last winter, in very fast time. H. C. Flower, Jr. '19, captain of the Freshman relay team, will be a good performer in the broad jump and the dashes. Already he has jumped further than any other broad-jumper in college, covering 20 feet with ease. With more experience as a runner he will be a dangerous opponent in 100-yard and 220-yard dashes. E. W. Pervere '19 and W. R. Swart '19 showed promise in the sprints in the interdormitory meet this fall. The 440-yard dash will be taken care of by M. A. Shattuck '19, H. W. Rose '19, and C. W. Cook '19. The 1919 team appears to be well fortified in the broad jump with three jumpers, in addition to Flower, who did well this fall: R. O'N. West '19, S. F. Cook '19, and A. Perkins '19. In the hurdles there are R. Little '19 and W. B. Peak '19. C. C. Bassett '19 and C. W. Alexander '19 in the half-mile, R. E. Jackson '19 in the shot-put, are likely performers. In the two-mile, E. H. Kelton '19 and H. E. Small '19, who ran well on the Freshman cross-country team, are the leading candidates.
