Philadelphia, Pa., April 30.--In one of the most thrilling sets of events ever held in a Pennsylvania Relay Carnival, the University athletes claimed a large share of the honors by defeating the speedy Pennsylvania relay team in the one-mile college relay championship, and placing in several other events. The University quartet exhibited a marvelous burst of speed and covered the mile in 3 minutes 19 seconds, within one second of the world's record established by Pennsylvania last year.

Harvard, Wisconsin, Princeton, and Pennsylvania lined up at the start of this race. T. R. Pennypacker '16 had the pole at the start, but was unable to hand over any lead to A. Biddle '16. Biddle started out fast and moved up into second place, followed by the Wisconsin runner and Dorsey, Pennsylvania's runner. Captain W. J. Bingham '16, however, on the third relay, safely established a 5-yard lead over Princeton and Wisconsin. The University's anchor man, W. Willcox, Jr., '17, started off with a terrific spring, which gave him a clean lead of 10 yards over the field. Moore of Princeton and Meredith of Pennsylvania were fighting hard for second place. Wisconsin was hopelessly outclassed. At the final turn Willcox uncorked a beautiful sprint which carried him through the winner with Princeton second, and Pennsylvania third. Meredith made a desperate effort to overcome the lead of the Harvard and Princeton flyers, but he was able to gain only a little. Willcox's quarter was clocked in 48 4-5.

In the 2 and 4-mile relays, Yale and Cornell equalled the world's records of 7 minutes 53 seconds and 17 minutes 51 1-5 seconds respectively.

In the open events E. A. Teschner '17, against a fast field, took third place in the final of the 100-yard dash, and W. Moore '18 was second in the first trial heats of the century, but failed to get into the finals. H. J. Coolidge '16 ran third in the first trial heat of the 120-yard hurdles, but also could not break into a place in the finals.

In the high-jump, J. O. Johnstone '16 tied for third with Treweeke of Kansas, while G. G. Haydock '16, Rector of Dartmouth, Curtis of Syracuse, Ranyun of Pennsylvania State, and Sewell of Penn- sylvania tied for third in the pole-vault.

Richards of Cornell and Oler of Yale, as was expected, struggled against each other in the high-jump. They tied at 6 feet 3 inches, but Richards won on the jump-off.

Simpson of Missouri equalled the world's record of 15 seconds flat in the 120-yard high hurdles, while Mucks of Wisconsin threw the discus 145 feet 11 1-2 inches, thereby breaking the collegiate record by 5 feet 9 inches.
