‘The Architect of the Whole Plan’: Harvard Law Graduate Ken Chesebro’s Path to Jan. 6
Today marks the beginning of a new epoch in the history of the University, for Harvard has at last an officers' training corps for Navy men. The ensign school, formerly at Technology, has been moved here. With the radio school in full swing and the ensign candidates coming here for instruction, the University is indeed in war paint.
This is as it should be. We have the equipment and it should be given to the government without delay. To hold our place in the world of colleges we must not be over conservative--we must shape ourselves to conditions. We have a law school, a medical school, a divinity school; now that the country needs naval officers we are starting an ensign school.
To the cadets we give a real welcome. Many of them are already Harvard men; we hope the others will feel that they too belong to the University. We want to make their stay here as pleasant as we can; the College is at their disposal. We are their hosts; they are among the most welcome guests we have ever had.
