Iowa is not a "militarist" state. It is not even excitable on questions of defence. It is well inland. Bombardment of the coast seems a long way distant, to the Iowan. Pacifism, loosely interpreted, is fairly strong in Iowa. But what do you suppose is the public opinion of that state on universal military training? The newspapers reflect with accuracy the opinions of their readers-they wouldn't do business long if they did not. A poll has been taken, from DesMoines, of the Iowa newspapers on this question, and it resulted like this: In favor of universal training,  32 papers Against universal training,  4 papers Neutral or noncommittal,  3 papers
