The privacy and simplicity of the last rites in honor of Theodore Roosevelt will not prevent the American people from standing as one great mourning family at the dead chieftain's bier today. The tributes that have been paid to him by the great and little of the nation--of all nations--are of perfect sincerity, and sometimes of a degree of emotion that almost chokes their utterance, but all are inadequate, all seem commonplace in the light of his own greatness, which has not died with him, which cannot fade from the earth, and which will, with time, inspire our orators and our poets to their highest flights.
