A CLASS CREW RACE WITH YALE

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Among the after-war athletic problems which the University encounters is the restoration of the annual race between the championship class crew at New Haven and Cambridge. That such a race is desired is undeniable: the oarsmen of sub-University calibre all are anxious for the test. As the race has been over the Basin course for several years past, it is likely, if rowed, that it would be held on the Housatonic.

Rowing is the most popular spring sport in the University. With a class regatta on Thursday deep interest has developed among the contending eights. But it has been the dim prospects of a meeting with a Yale shell that has served to put the increased vitality into the work at the boat house. It is only just that such endeavor should be rewarded, if financially it is possible to do so.

War has depleted the Athletic Association's reserves, but a large bank balance will result from the football game November 22. That economy is necessary, that foolish expenditure is unjustifiable, is obvious Undergraduates in the nature of events must be penalized for the war. Competition with Yale, however, is an immense asset in increasing the popularity of any sport. Money spent wisely to provide such contests for minor teams will do more than any other action to increase the general participation in organized athletics.

A class race with Yale does not call for an unreasonable outlay; it serves as a stimulant for an excellent sport. The University favors a race for the class championship on the river.
