MEET YALE FRESHMEN UNDER BIG HANDICAP

O'HEARN MAIN COG OF ELIS

The Freshmen's diet was mixed a trifle yesterday, and team. A went through an informal workout against Skip Sherlock's protegees from the High School of Commerce. Most of the scrimmage was confined to dummy work with the linesmen half-blocking and touch-tackling. For ten minutes, though, the Yearlings mixed it up with the recent vanquishers of Erasmus Hall, a New York aggregation, scoring rapidly from the start at midfield. These results were encouraging in that several of the most valuable backs and linesmen were out of the play. In fact, the backfield was almost entirely substitutes, E. S. Gehrke, P. Jenkins and L. Lockwood watching from the side lines. Not one of these men is seriously hurt, though Lockwood's leg is in rather troublesome shape. Gehrke and Jenkins, who have been the mainstay of 1924's attack, have sustained minor injuries which may keep them out part of the time Saturday. In that event the Freshmen will be sorely crippled and weakened nearly by half their offensive power. J. G. Donovan, bulky guard, took a light workout on account, of a bad leg, while Captain D. S. Holder was plainly not up to the mark and was kept out of the rough work. Any or all of these men may start Saturday, but Ryan and Trainer Caples were extremely doubtful. Grew and C. Hubbard seem permanently shelved by injury. And Ryan lost his best line-plunging back in mid-October, when Carnegie broke his ankle.

Elis Most Formidable

In any case, 1924 is slated to meet its stiffest opposition in the Eli team, which comes to Soldiers Field Saturday. Undefeated, the Blue cub will come on the gridiron confident of maintaining their record. With two of the best backs in Freshman football and a strong line, the Elis have one of the most formidable teams of their class in the country. Hotchkiss and Exeter fell easy victims to their prolonged onslaught in the early season games. In Andover, however, a worthy opponent was found. Wingate, the fast Andover back, tossed a brilliant pass to Maht and kicked a long field goal, accounting for the small end of a 14-10 score. In this game Charles O'Hearn, former Exeter star quarterback, and Neidlinger, a sensational Andover half-back, first displayed their remarkable form which has since marked the Yale games. O'Hearn ran 45 yards through a broken field for a touchdown, and later shot a lateral pass to Neidlinger, bringing his team within scoring distance. The latter and Wight then carried the ball over for the winning tally in a series of slashing plunges.

It was only in the second half that the Elis succeeded in reversing the Tigers, but their exhibition was brilliant throughout. The Nassau eleven had managed, by a lot of hard work, to keep their opponents from scoring in the first half. But just after the second period opened. O'Hearn caught a punt standing on his 20-yard line and wormed his way 80 yards through the entire Princeton combination. Neidlinger and Wight, halfbacks, were very effective, and the coaches demonstrated they had two excellent substitutes for them in Warner and Ped. The latter kicked an emergency goal in perfect style, while Warner celebrated his entrance in the contest by a 15-yard run to within five yards of the Tiger's goal.

Last Saturday the New Haven aggregation met Dean Academy, against which the Freshmen scored 15 points early in the season. The Eli yearlings, however, scored almost at will, piling up 41 points with the utmost ease
