120 MEN REPORT AT FIRST HOCKEY MEETING OF YEAR

Hockey at Cambridge received an enthusiastic start last night when more than 120 candidates for the University and 1924 sevens gathered at the Union. Short talks by Captain E. L. Bigelow '21 and Manager Philip Hofer '21, outlining the work of the season, and a brief blackboard discussion by Coach William H. Claflin '15, were features of the meeting. Active practice will begin on the Charles-bank Rinks as soon as weather permits the University squad being scheduled to open daily workouts in the New Boston Arena after Christmas vacation.

While no intensive training will be required of the men previous to next month, strict training will be expected to start after Christmas. The University players will be recalled to Cambridge on either December 29 or 30, when scrimmage drilling will begin. Coach Claflin will have complete charge of the Senior septet, continuing the famous "Winsor" system, originated and perfected by Robert Winsor '05.

L. M. Lombard '17 will again be at the head of the Freshman squad, and may be assisted by several other former University players. Strenuous work for the yearling candidates will not commence until after the holidays, though light workouts will start within a week or two if weather conditions permit.

Numbered among the letter-men to report last night were eight forwards, including Captain E. L. Bigelow '21, C. W. Baker '21, R. W. Buntin '21, F. McN Bacon '21, John Gaston '21, H. B. W. Snelling '21, former Captain R. W. Emmons ocC., and Donald Angier '22. Buntin, who gained his "H" two years ago, R. S. Humphrey '21 and J. A. Sessions were unable to play last year, but with previous experience on their Freshman team to their credit, should prove formidable contenders. Gedrge Owen '23 will be the mainstay of the back-line, while Jabish Holmes '21, with two years' training on the University seven, will be the first choice for goal. C. S. Stillman '21 and J. G. Flint '23 are other goal-tend candidates with experience.

From last season's Freshman aggregation will come several players of considerable ability. Owen and Flint being the most prominent. Joseph Larocque and D. F. Thayer proved themselves forwards of ability. Last year's substitute line will be represented by G. S. Baldwin '21, L. B. Van Ingen '21 and J. M. Martin '22.
