Harry R. Coffin '94, a many years' student of the game of football, has proposed a radical change in football rules, which is to be brought before the rules committee at its meeting late this month or early in March.
His proposition is to have football games constituted by a given number of plays--40 plays to a period--and to discard the step-watch.
Such a change as this would revolutionize the game of football, and, in the opinion of former Coach Percy D. Haughton, Dean Briggs, chairman of the athletic committee, and Walter Camp, noted sporting writer, it would be a welcome improvement. These men, together with Mr. Coffin, believe that this change would stop the extreme variation in number of plays in every game, which is neither fair nor scientific. And it would also prevent teams from playing against time to maintain a small lead, a practice which has caused much trouble in the past.
