CHANGES TO BE MADE IN HEMENWAY GYMNASIUM

Increased Numbers Making Use of Facilities and Large Boxing Classes Necessitate Remodelling of Downstairs Area and Lockerrooms

Owing to the record breaking number of men using the Hemenway Gymnasium this fall and especially to the phenomenal growth in the popularity of boxing, the Department of Physical Education has been obliged to undertake several changes in the arrangements at the gymnasium in order to make room for as many more men as possible.

The boxing class is to be taken out of the boxing room and installed in the present handball courts, which are considerably larger and will allow about 25 more men in each of the afternoon sections. This increased room is especially needed in the 4.45 class which for many weeks has been so overcrowded that students have been obliged to go into classes earlier in the afternoon.

As a new location for the displaced handball courts, it has been decided to tear down the old bowling alleys and erect new courts in their place. Ever since the war time period when these alleys were used as a storeroom, they have been unfit for play and their removal will make room for the five new handball courts. The present boxing room will also be transformed into courts, it being expected that at least four small-sized playing areas can belayed off there.

The shortage of lockers is also causing a rearrangement of space. So far this fall more men have signed up for lockers than registered all last season, and rentals are still being made at an average rate of about 10 to 15 a day. Yesterday afternoon only about a dozen lockers remained and it is expected that it will be necessary to start a waiting list today. To relieve this situation partially 75 more lockers have been ordered and within a few days more will be installed on one of the upper floors of the building.
