BOWDOIN RUNNERS ONLY OPPONENTS OF CRIMSON

FRESHMEN ANTICIPATE KEEN OPPOSITION AT ANDOVER

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

This afternoon both the University and Freshman cross-country teams will encounter powerful opponents, the former meeting the Bowdoin aggregation on the Charles River Course at 4 o'clock, and the first year squad running against the Andover harriers at Andover.

Arrangements had been made by the University managers to have a three-cornered race, Tufts being the third contestor. Word was recieved definitely yesterday that Tufts would not be able to muster a team, and so today's contest will be only a dual encounter.

Bowdoin will bring seven runners to Cambridge, six of whom were members of the Maine institution's team last year. The veterans are Captain Plaisted, East-mann, Foster, Howes, Miller, and Knoll. The seventh man on the team is Berry. The Bowdoin harriers under Coach Magee's tutelage last season made an excellent showing. In the Maine Intercollegiates the team came in second, being headed only by the University of Maine. In the New England Intercollegiate Cross Country Run last year the Bowdoin runners placed fourth, Maine, Bates, and M. I. T. defeating them in the contest for places. The men who should give the Crimson hill and dale men the strongest opposition are Captain Plaisted, Howes, and Foster.

Captain Coburn Out

Coach Farrell has not yet definitely selected the men who will run for the University today. Captain Coburn and L. B. R. Barker '26 are definitely out of the competition, there being a grave doubt whether the former will be ready to race even by next week. The course which will be covered will be about five miles, beginning near the Anderson Bridge on the South side of the river, leading up the river as far as Water-town, and then back to the Bridge along the north bank. The first five men on each side to cross the finish will be the only ones to count in the scoring. It is probable that Coach Farrell will choose nine or ten runners to represent the Crimson.

Crimson Record Good

Last Friday the University cross-country squad gained a clean cut victory over Middlebury by a 17-38 count. Covering the hilly Belmont course in fast time B. R. Cutcheon '25 took first place, and was followed closely by three other Crimson entrants, W. L. Chapin Jr. '25. H. R. Kobes '26, and W. C. Harrison '25. E. B. Boyce '26, who was the fifth University runner to finish, took seventh place.

The first year squad will encounter a fast and well trained school-boy team when it runs in Andover today. Coach Shepard has developed an outfit which will no doubt trouble the Crimson runners greatly. Each team will run ten men, with only the first five men on each side to finish, to count in the scoring.

Last week in a meet with the Spring-field 1927 team the Freshman harriers dropped first and second places and were defeated 26 to 31. A. D. Dowling, who ran last week, will be ineligible for today's race and his place will be taken by C. L. Wright.
