BASEBALL MEN GET OUTDOORS AT LAST

Six Letter Men All Likely to Start as Regulars in B. U. Game--Squads Will Be Cut Before Spring Trips

The University and Freshman baseball squads had their first outdoor practice of the season yesterday afternoon; the University practicing on the Freshman diamond while the Freshmen played on the second University field. The workout for the University consisted of long batting practice which gave infielders and especially the outfielders their first intensive work of the season. The outfielders were handicapped somewhat by the strong wind that swept across the field.

Although the team that will face Boston University has not been definitely decided upon, the six letter men, Captain George Owen Jr. '23, C. C. Buell '23, J. S. Clark Jr. '23, Lewis Gordon '24, Percy Jenkins '24 and D. F. Thayer '23, will probably form the nucleus of the nine. K. N. Hill '24 is likely to start on the mound with R. F. Cordingley '25 and J. E. Toulmin '25 as reserves. Fifty men are now reporting regularly at practice and in order to reduce this number to a squad more easily handled, the first cut will be made shortly after Saturday's game and from this number will be selected the 21 men who will be taken on the southern trip during the spring vacation. The schedule of this trip includes games with William and Mary College at Richmond, the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Catholic University at Washington, and the University of Maryland at College Park.

The Freshman squad in yesterday's practice showed unexpected power and indications point to a successful season. The fielders were given their first chance to show their worth outside while the battery candidates continued their workout in the cage. Coach Davidson will keep his rather large squad for some time in order to give every man plenty of chance to develop. By the time that the Freshman squad goes on its spring trip through Connecticut, the team will probably be reduced to 17 men.
