Government 17B Hear Novel Lecturer Speak on Police Problems

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Speaking before the students in Government 17B yesterday afternoon, Thomas F. Goode, Deputy Superintendent of the Boston Police Department, spoke on "The Policeman and His Work".

Mr. Goode described in detail the problem of recruiting a new force following the police strike in 1919, which confronted the Boston Police Department at that time.

In describing how officers are trained and disciplined, Mr. Goods made an especial appeal for cooperation between the public and the police. "The criminal or crook never question the law " said Mr. Goode, "but the average citizen quite often resents the enforcement of necessary police regulation which interfere with his personal comfort or convenience."

In regard to the question of establishing a traffic court in Boston, Mr. Goode said: "I am strongly in favor of establishing a special traffic court for Boston, and believe that in time it will be necessary to prohibit practically all vehicle traffic in the retail district, except such as is absolutely necessary to the maintenance of business."

Mr. Goode is the father of Edward Goode '22 a former University baseball pitcher.
