WORCESTER COMES FROM BEHIND TO BEAT 1927

CLLIFFORD DOES WELL ON MOUND FOR SEVEN INNINGS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Worcester, Academy sent at well-trained, clean-fielding and hard-hitting nine to Soldiers Field on Saturday and forced the 1927 team to acknowledge a smarting 8 to 4 defeat. The defeat was humiliating because the Freshman led until the last two innings, when six runs rained from the visitors batz overwhelming the Freshmen.

Clifford started in the box for 1927 and kept the hits scattered and harmless. McGill found him for a triple in the second inning but was caught trying to stretch it into a home run. Again in the fourth two singles and a bad miscue of Ultman's opened the way for the first Worcester run, but Clifford was still safe.

It was in the fifth frame that the Freshmen let loose. When Captain Zarakov and Bennett had singled, Follett presented the Crimson with two walks, and a long sacritice fly with an error finished the scoring. Worcester added one in the sixth and in the eighth, after two men had grounded out, three singles with an error sent over three runs that put the schoolboys ahead.

Gates relieved Clifford in the ninth but could do little better. Merritt singled, Kennedy attempted to sacrifice but reached first safely when the Crimson pitcher fumbled the ball. At this crucial moment, Cooley, the visitors shortstop, leaned against one of Gates offerings for a home run bringing in three runs. A Freshman rally in the ninth failed before it could produce more than one run.
