When the tattooed man and the Circassian beauty were still listed among the "wonders of nature," and when darcdevils won fame by walking tight ropes across the Niagara River, walrus mustaches were prominent wherever cornerstones were laid or a political barbecue was damaged by rain.

Men permitted overhanging mustaches to make them look as if their happiness had been wrecked, but not always in an endeavor to conceal mismated teeth.
