LIVE UPDATES: Pro-Palestine Protesters Begin Encampment in Harvard Yard
In a steady downpour that turned the second team field into a quagmire, the scrubs opened their season by routing the strong St. John's Prep. team, conquerors last Saturday of Tufts Seconds, by a 22-0 score.
The powerful defensive play of the forward line, with Coolidge, left end, playing the stellar role, was the feature of the initial encounter. Not once did St. John's threaten to score, never approaching nearer than Harvard's 35-yard line. So superior were the scrub forwards that even the visitors kidking game was unable to function, kicks being constantly blocked.
Seconds Score on Blocked Kick
Harvard, following the kick-off scored on the first play by means of a blocked-kick by Coolidge, the ball rolling behind St. John's goal line, where Ford recovered it for a safety.
St. Johns put the ball in play on her 30-yard line, but failed to advance and resorted to a punt. The scrubs, after a short advance, also kicked. Three plays by St. Johns, all resulting in losses, again forced the schoolboys to kick from close to their goal. Coolidge was in like a flash and again blocked, the ball being recovered by Harvard for a touchdown. The try for goal was missed.
In the final period, with the Seconds leading 8-0, St. Johns resorted to an aerial attack; most of the passes were incompleted, but two of them were intercepted and turned into scores. In the middle of the fourth period, Braden, scrub carrier pulled down a St. Johns pass on their own forty-yard line, and raced the whole distance for a score.
Tilt Tallies on Blocked Pass
Just before the game ended, Tilt, Second team tackle, stopped another aerial toss and continued down the field for the final touchdown.
