TEAM IS ANNOUNCED FOR OXFORD DEBATE

University Won in 1922 but Lost to Britishers in 1923--Audience Will Vote to Decide Winner

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University debating team that will face Oxford at Symphony Hall next Friday was selected last evening.

D. W. Chapman '27, Barrett Williams '28, and Raymond S. Fanning 3L., will represent the University against the Oxonian debaters. A. M. Barnhart 2L. and D. L. Dickson '27 have been named as alternates.

The selection was made after trials in which 12 men on the debating squad took part and which were judged by two members of the faculty.

The University debaters will take the negative side of the question, which is announced as "Resolved, That the Growth and Activities of the Socialist Movement are detrimental to social progress."

The debate will be the third held in Boston between Oxford and Harvard. In 1922 Harvard was adjudged triumphant by the audience, and the following year Oxford won by a large majority. The debate on October 16 will break the deadlock. Following the English custom, there will be no formal judges of the debate, but the audience will vote to decide the winner.
