The death this week of J. R. Coolidge, Law '54, makes it apparent that George Augustus Peabody '52 is now the oldest living graduate of both Harvard College and the University.
Mr. Coolidge, who was 97 years old, was the oldest alumnus of the University. He never graduated from the College, although he attended the Lawrence Scientific School, then a part of the College, for two years. He was forced to leave on account of illness, but later returned and took his degree from the Law School in 1854.
Mr. Peabody has been the Senior alumnus of Harvard College for nearly two years. He is 94 years old.
The only alumnus of a graduate school who may be older than Mr. Peabody is Joseph Vanmeter, Law '53. There is no record at the University of the date of Mr. Vanmeter's birth, and no word has been received of him for many years.
