The baseball season will open at 2 o'clock when battery candidates for both the University and the Freshman teams will report at the cage for the first practice session of the year.
There will be no meeting of the ball players until about March 1 when the aspirants for all positions on the nine will be summoned. Coach E. W. Mahan '16 will take charge of today's practice. Fred Mitchell, battery coach; and Claude Davidson, Freshman coach, will be on hand to assist Mahan in instructing the players this winter. After the coaches are able to judge their players, the squad will be divided into two divisions that will practice at different hours.
The coaches will have an abundance of material to work with this year. Phillip Spalding '25 regular pitcher last spring. J. C. Toulmin '25, relief pitcher on the 1924 team, and E. L. Gehrke ocC., who pitched on the 1923 nine, should be the leading candidates for the mound position. R. H. Booth '27 whose brilliant pitching last year subdued the Yale 1927 nine will also be out for work in the cage.
M. A. Cheek, Jr. '26, regular catcher last year, will report for practice today, but A. W. Samborski '25 who alternated with Cheek last spring will not report until after the close of the basketball season.
