IMPROVED 1930 ELEVEN OUTPLAYS EXETER TEAM

WETMORE STARS IN OFFENSIVE AGAINST SCHOOLBOYS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Although they completely outplayed the Exeter eleven from the start to the finish of last Saturday's game, the Freshman football team was unable to score until the final period, when a safety gave them a meagre 2 to 0 triumph. Soon after the opening of the fourth quarter, a five yard penalty and an incomplete pass forced the Freshmen to punt to Exeter's 14-yard line. On the first play, Coombs, Exeter quarterback, fumbled, and while recovering the ball was upset by two Crimson-jerseyed tacklers behind his own goal-line. On this slim advantage did the margin of Crimson victory rest.

1930 Gains on Passes

At all times the Harvard first-year aggregation displayed a smooth, powerful attack, efficient in gaining ground alike by running plays and by the forward pass, but woefully lacking in a scoring punch. The play was in Exeter's territory most of the time, but half a dozen excellent scoring chances were tossed away; Devens missed three field goals by narrow margins, and one attempt by Wetmore was blocked.

Any offense that Exeter may have had was rendered powerless by the constant fumbling of the schoolboy backs. The Harvard line refused to yield to any attack, and the home team was forced to resort to a kicking game, which succeeded in holding off the Freshmen to a certain extent, although Wetmore, flashy 1930 quarterback, excelled in the handling and running back of these punts.

Freshman Attack Smooth

Exeter kicked off to start the game, and on the first play a pass, Wetmore to Mason, gained 25 yards. This combination, with either man on the receiving end, attempted a number of heaves and completed a majority of them.

On short rushes, the Freshmen worked the pigskin to the Exeter 25-yard mark, where an attempted field goal by Devens missed its mark by a small margin.
