STATISTICS SHOW HARVARD PROGENY LESS THAN YALE

EDUCATION'S POSTPONEMENT OF MARRIAGE ONE CAUSE

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A recent statement made by Dr. M. P. Revenal of the University of Missouri revealed the new statistics prepared by life insurance companies and public health organizations on the birth rate among American college graduates. His figures amazed a meeting of state educators.

The families of Harvard graduates average only 1.6 children, it was shown by the statistics. Yale graduates better this mark with an average of 1.7 children.

The tabulated facts also indicate that the graduates of women's colleges are becoming more and more addicted to celibacy. The records for Vassar alumnae disclose an average of 0.6 children for the entire graduate body. Wellesley tops this quota with a ratio of 0.86 progeny for its former members.

Education Postpones Marriage

Mr. C. S. Joslyn, Instructor in the Division of Economics, stated yesterday in regard to the constant decrease in the birth-rate of college graduates. "There are several immediate causes responsible for the decline in the number of offspring among the educated class of American people. Primarily, of course, the postponement of marriage necessitated by a college education reduces the size of families. Secondly, fewer marriages and higher standards of living affect the increase of American racial stock. However, the decrease is more a social than a racial phenomenon. With the increase of Intellectual development, higher standards of selection and frequently the desire for single existence rather than married life result.

"The present trend means that our future population will be produced from the lower social and economic groups. The question much discussed by eugenic experts and by economists at present is whether this shift in racial stock will make any difference in the quality of the people of the next generation. It revives the old issue of the comparative influence of environment and heredity."

More Males Marry

A treatise on the subject of the disappearance of the American racial stock written by Professor R. H. Johnson of the University of Pittsburgh asserts that 73 per cent of male college graduates eventually get married while only 48 per cent of feminine graduate scholars are led to the altar.

Another side-light on the number of offspring of University alumni is afforded by Professor J. C. Phillips, nationally known genetic expert, who says, "It is worthy of note that the number of children born to Yale graduates is almost constantly higher than that for Harvard, while the number of childless marriages is slightly less."

Professor Phillips shows in his statistics that approximately 75 per cent of Harvard graduates enter into matrimony, a higher average than several other American universities have
