PEACE WITH HONOR

Of all the elections that have marked the brief career of the German Republic, that of Sunday was most significant. Two facts stand out in the news of an overwhelming liberal victory: first, that the chauvinist Nationalist party, with its semi monarchical leanings and its vengeful grinding of teeth is unsatisfactory to the nation: second, that Germany is willing to go beyond a mere chiding of its die hard by militarists by supporting the pacifistic and conciliatory policies of Foreign Minister Sudesmann.

The German people have always been fond of chasing will of the wisps, but with great care to been both feet out of the marsh. Disarmed Germany has everything to gain from world peace and world disarmament, commercial Germany has everything to gain by reacquiring the world's friendship. The way was long from the tales of grue some that made the from pages of 1918 hideous is the acclaim that the Bremen's heroine crew has won in 1928. Whatever Germany's time in doffing her cuirass and carrying a dove on her wrist, she has succeeded beyond cavil in regaining a position of honor and trust among the nations. She has honestly endeavored to sustain a balance of concord in the world; and while other powers equivocate on treaties of peace, she has steadfastly backed them. One does not need to believe that this is altruism; it is enough that the ogre has proved to be a very gentle creature, and that Deutsche Treue has found international bearing where once was jingoism.
