HARVARD TRIMS RHODE ISLAND BY 9 TO 3 SCORE

ISLANDERS BRING TALLY TO 3-3 TIE IN THIRD

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Keeping up to the hard hitting standards that have been in evidence during the last few games, Harvard's baseball team outplayed the Rhode Island Staters 9 to 3 yesterday afternoon on Soldiers Field. Both teams had their moments of wildness, while the unconservative style of play put on by the visiting nine provided considerable excitement for the onlookers. Taylor proved quite effective as the Harvard pitcher, performing like a veteran against the scrappy but none too powerful batters of the losers.

After a good deal of loose playing which made it look as though the error columns were going to be long for both sides, the last out of the first inning was finally made with the score 2 to 2. An error by Mays, a squeeze play by the Rhode Islanders, followed by a base hit by Martynik, opposing pitcher, garnered the visitors two runs in the opening half of this frame. In Harvard's half of the inning McCaffrey started things off by receiving a pass. McGrath hit safely, and advanced to third on Ticknor's sacrifice fly, later scoring on an error by Cragan, visiting backstop. Des Roches made the second Harvard tally, receiving a pass; and advancing on Cragan's error, scoring a moment later when Potter, Rhode Island shortstop, threw the ball into the Harvard dugout. Wood flied out for the final out.

Lupien Hits Homer

In the second inning the visitors knocked two easy rollers to Taylor for two outs, and ended the inning with a fly to Ticknor at left field. Lupien started Harvard's half of the frame by driving out a long fly to right field, a ball which proved too much for Pray of Rhode Island, who juggled the sphere for a long enough time to let the batter circle the bases. Sheldon hit safely, after which Martynik took a brace and struck out Mays and Taylor. Passes to McCaffrey and McGrath filled the bases, but Cragan pulled his team out of a bad hole by hurling himself high against the screen behind the batter's box to capture a foul knocked by Ticknor, thus ending the inning.

Rhode Island Ties Count

In the first half of the third Rhode Island made the count 3 to 3 when two Harvard errors let in a run. With two outs Taylor passed up Goff, who proceeded to steal second on the next pitch. Sheldon had signalled for a pitchout, but once the ball was in his hands he threw over May's head, allowing Goff to continue to third. With a runner on third, Martynik drove a hard grounder to Wood, who was unable to field the ball cleanly, and Goff scored, Martynik stretching his base hit for two bases. In the midst of this confusion Des Roches pulled the situation out of the fire by making a valiant stab at the hard grounder sent out by Potter, catching Martynik flat-footed as he tore into the base. Two flies and a strike out was Harvard's record in this inning.

Sheldon-Wood Double Play

In the fourth frame with one out and two men on Rhode Island tried a double steal, just as Sheldon was attempting to work a pitchout. The Harvard backstop sensed the situation, however, and leaving his post behind the bat quickly cut off Barnatowich from first base, threw to Des Roches who had come up from third to cover second: when this effort failed, the Harvard third sacker tossed the ball to Wood, who chased down towards third base to tag out Cragan between second and third. Barnatowich, who had been safe on second, was out a moment later on an attempt to steal third. In Harvard's half of this stanza Ticknor flied out to center field, and Taylor and McCaffrey fanned.

Rhode Island was retired in one-two-three order in the fifth and sixth, while in the seventh Ticknor and McCaffrey disagreed over a fly ball, allowing one man to reach first before the side was retired. In the last two frames the losers were retire in short order, the only men to reach first being Pray, whom Taylor passed in the eighth, and, Arnold, who received a base on balls in the final stanza.

Make Hay in Sixth

After being put out in one-two-three order in the fifth, Harvard made hay in the sixth inning, rolling up six runs before the bewildered Rhode Island pitcher could collect himself. Sheldon started off by driving out a long fly which the Rhode Island outfielders failed to collect until the Harvard backstop had reached third. Mays was passed, taking second when Taylor tapped out an infield grounder. Taylor himself was safe, since the visiting first sacker took his foot off the bag in attempting the putout.

With the bases crowded and none out, Martynik issued passes to McCaffrey and McGrath, forcing in Sheldon and Mays. McGrath was out on Wood's grounder to third, and Ticknor made it two out with a fly to Cragan. Taylor scored on a single by DesRoches, McCaffrey came in on Wood's effort, DesRoches and Wood scored on a double by Lupien. Sheldon retired the side with a fly to left. This concluded Harvard aggression for the day.
