CASEY APPOINTED BY ELY TO STATE'S FISTICUFF BOARD

E. L. Casey '19, head coach of football, was yesterday appointed a Boxing Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for a three-year term by Governor Joseph B. Ely. The appointment must still be ratified by the Governor's Council, which meets next Wednesday, but action by the Council is generally only a formality.

Casey's new position will not interfere in any way with his activities as Harvard's mentor of football. In the past he has always been connected with amateur rather than professional sports, this being his first venture in the professional boxing line. Taking the place of Eugene Buckley, whose term as commissioner came to an end on December 4, 1931, Casey will serve on the boxing commission with Thomas Niland, of Lynn, whose term expires next October, and with Lieutenant-General Alfred F. Foote, retired, honorary chairman of the commission and director of public safety of the Commonwealth.

Succeeding Buckley, who was one of the original appointees of former Governof Calvin Coolidge and is largely responsible for the development of professional boxing in Massachusetts, Casey faces a tremendous task. During Buckley's 11 years as a commissioner, he has been the dominating figure in the business of the commission, and now the greater part of the retiring commissioner's duties as "spokesman" of the commission fall upon the new member.
