VARSITY SLUGGISH IN ITS DEFEAT OF WEAK LEHIGH SET

Casey Uses Fast Backs Continuously As Second-String Men Carry Most Of Running Attack

By R. W. Paul

Despite its 27-0 total against Lehigh the Varsity revealed more weaknesses and a greater degree of sluggishness in its performance Saturday than in any game this season. Of course the second-string men replaced the "A" lineup during the greater part of the afternoon, but, nevertheless, the Varsity failed to reveal in its victory over the Brown and White the promise it showed in its tie with Dartmouth or its defeat by Holy Cross.

In the two previous games the team proved that it had a fighting defense. It also proved that it had an offense riddled with holes but capable at times of clicking beautifully. Yesterday neither offense nor defense showed any promise. Realizing that for the first time since the Holy Cross game they were up against inferior opposition, the first-string men settled down to a sluggish, unexciting contest. The reaction from the two previous closely-fought games was perfectly natural, but some terrible weaknesses were revealed.

Notably, the blocking was very weak. Harvard gave its carriers extraordinarily poor support. Again and again fast men like Allie Sherman, Pesky, and Adzigian were expected to do all the work in making first downs. With Lehigh playing a ragged, open style the "speed merchants" were able to reel off sizeable gains, but against a team like West Point these unassisted sprints will not stand a chance. Furthermore, Eddie Casey seems willing to let his quarterbacks continue the policy of running one man in play after play until sheer weariness forces his retirement. For the better part of one period Lehigh could count on Allie Sherman carrying the ball. Their defense acted accordingly.

Aside from that there is not a great deal to say about the running game, since Casey kept the reserves on the field most of the time. In the forward pass department the Crimson intercepted all four Lehigh passes.
