WHITESIDE GETS ONLY 55 ASPIRANTS FOR CREW

THREE-CORNERED RACE AGAINST CORNELL, SYRACUSE IS OUT

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

At the preliminary meeting held yesterday afternoon in the Eliot House Common Room, 55 men reported to Coach Whiteside as candidates for the Varsity crew. The turnout was the smallest in several years, but more carsmen are expected to report during the next few weeks, and after the close of the winter sports seasons. Seventy-five men reported to Freshman Coach Bert Haines at the Union in the evening.

Triangular Race Dropped

The triangular race with Cornell and Syracuse has been dropped from the schedule, as part of the economy program of the Athletic Association. The season will also be shortened by two weeks, starting on April 29 with the triangular regatta between Harvard, Princeton, and M.I.T., and closing with the Yale race a week earlier than usual, on June 16.

Coach Whiteside said yesterday that prospects were more than favorable for a successful season. With the entire first crew of last year except J. M. Erickson '32, No. 3, available, there should be little difficulty in forming an experienced boat.

For the first time this year the B. F. Vanderveer cup is to be awarded to a member of the Freshman crew rowing against Yale. The award will be made to the man who shows the most improvement, is outstanding in sportsmanship, and who does the most for the betterment of the crew. It has been given in honor of B. F. Vanderveer '35, captain of last year's Freshman crew, who was killed in an accident last summer.
