With all four goals coming in the third periods both Varsity and Freshman soccer teams struggled to 1-1 ties against Springfield and Tufts Freshmen here Saturday.
Right inside Hanson of the Gymnasts scored first when he shot past Put Williams on a cross from his halfback. A moment later Dick Lewis seized the ball at midfield, fought his way up towards the invaders' goal, and passed to Newlin Hastings, who took his time, aimed, and fired a perfect shot into the draperies.
On the Freshman field the Yardlings were going into the third quarter as the Varsity entered the fourth. Eric Johnson scored first for the home team, while a few minutes before the end Captain Buckley pushed the equalizer past Crimson Captain Sammy Merrill.
In both games Harvard had the better of the play, but in each case the winning break failed to materialize. Twice kicks by Jim Wood failed by inches, while the Yardlings going with the wind in the second period were all over the Jumbo cage without being able to get the ball in.
