The Harvard sports endowment fund has reached a total of $167,000 and will be increased by $25,000 as soon as the bequest of Thomas W. Slocum '90 is received, President Conant announced last night at the Varsity Club Dinner.
"The endowment fund in its present state is," he said, "only a beginning, but we have hopes that it will grow through the years."
Bingham Speaks
William J. Bingham '16, Director of Athletics, also spoke, and said that he expected the present "three-presidents agreement" will go down as a contribution to intercollegiate athletics. "The tramp athlete has gone," he said. "He doesn't exist in these three institutions. I am sure that the three colleges are playing the game according to the rules. But the starting date for practice should be changed. It should vary with the date the season ends." He expressed the belief that some adjustment would be made shortly.
"I still feel," he continued, "that teams can be made up of boys going to college instead of athletes incidentally going to college."
Bingham also expressed the hope that money would be forthcoming for the projected hockey rink. "It is too bad," he declared, "that we cannot do more for boys who want to skate."
Toastmaster at the dinner was Huntington R. Hardwick '15. Other speakers were Wes Fesler, Richard C. Floyd '11, president of the club; Russ Allen, Dick Harlow, and John R. Kilpatric, former Yale end and at present the president of Madison Square Garden.
One hundred and eighty were present. Floyd announced that the membership of the club is now 1100, a new high.
