VARSITY CAGERS TOP TECH IN FIRST GAME

In an impressive opener of its first season as a major sport, the Varsity basketball team last night trounced the M.I.T. cagers 58-33 at the Indoor Athletic Building after the Yardlings had bowed to the Tech Freshmen in a preliminary game 31-28.

Tonight both the Crimson Varsity and Freshmen will meet Northeastern opponents in the Gym with the Yardling encounter scheduled to start at 7:30 o'clock, followed by the first team game at approximately 8:45.

Varsity Shows Promise

Although ragged at times the play of the Varsity indicated that Coach Wes Fesler's prediction of a "better team" will be fulfilled. Ball handling and shooting were especially advanced for the first game.

Any fear that the vacancies caused by the graduation of Bill Gray and Leavitt White was dispelled. At White's forward position Charlie Lutz was the individual star, chalking up 15 points, with Gray's successor at center, John Herrick, second in scoring honors with ten tallies.

Crimson Takes Early Lead

Following Tech's early lead by virtue of a free throw, Captain Vernon Struck tied it up at one all and the Crimson was never again headed. At the half the Engineers were behind 30-13.

With frequent Crimson substitutions in the latter part of the game, the visiting hoopsters, led by Dick Wilson, reserve center, who sank four field goals, rallied. George Lowman played all but a few minutes of the game either at forward or center, where he substituted for Herrick.

Freshmen Lose to M. I. T.

Although a last-period surge almost netted victory, the Freshman hoopsters could only come within three points of M.I.T., losing their opening game 31-28 last night at the Indoor Athletic Gymnasium.

The Crimson starters were Gene Lovett and Homer Peabody at the forward spots, Charley Brackett at center, and Ray Holt and Bud James at guards.
