Red Top, New London, Conn., June 15-workouts since the arrival of Tom Bolles four Crimson crews here last Saturday seem to indicate some improvement in the Varsity as a result of recent shifts, although the Jayvees as a whole have shown a tendency to bog down.
Varsity by 5 Lengths
In a one mile sprint today the Varsity beat the Jayvees by five lengths with the Yardlings another length in the rear. The combination crew sprinted one mile alone in slightly slower time than the Freshmen.
The varsity continued on an eight mile paddle today, while the others came in after shorter jaunts. All of the crews are spacing well, with little tendency to check, but the Jayvees have shown some inclination to shorten up; the combines, main trouble at the present seems to be balance.
Yale Has Higher Stroke
Yale went for its first time trial this afternoon, and were clocked at 20:02, This is slightly faster than Harvard's first time, but the Ellis rowed higher during most of the course. On Saturday Spike Chace, Crimson stroke, kept the count at 32 most of the way, while Johnson, Yale pace-setter, stayed around 33 or 34. Yale is longer at the reach and lays back further, with slight sousing of the bow as a result.
Last Trial Saturday
The Jayvees, Freshmen and Combination will have a two mile trial tomorrow; the Varsity has its last trial over the full distance Saturday.
