FRESHMEN COME OUT FOR FOOTBALL MANAGER

Small Turnout Compared to Five Years Ago, but Progression Downward Has Come to End

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

First chapter in the managerial history of '41 was begun yesterday afternoon when 17 candidates reported to Manager Bob Whitman at the Varsity Club. After a brief meeting in which the immediate duties ad eventual privileges were outlined, the "efficiency squad" was led to Soldiers field and put to work.

Although small in terms of the "good old days" when a Varsity letter still loomed larger in the undergraduate mind than a Phi Beta Kappa key, this year's turnout was by no means discouraging. For the last four years, the number of candidates has decreased in an alarming progression, starting with 40 for the Class of '37, 25 hopefuls from '38, 16 from '39, and a paltry dozen from '40. Yesterday's 17 may mark the rounding of depression's corner, and the more superstitions members of the managerial staff even heralded it as all omen of major football victories this fall.

Nor will these 17 complete the list, Manager Whitman explained. The door is by no means closed to those who still wish to enter the competition. As in past years, many who are cut from the Yardling squad may wish to continue their association with Harvard football in this way. "But Skip wants me to emphasize," Whitman added, "there is a full schedule of 2nd Freshman games for those who recognize no substitute for the game itself."
