Swimmers Crush Springfield 59 to 16; Gymnast Rawstrom Cracks 220 Record

Springfield's Hurry Rawstrom broke the New England Intercollegiate swimming Association record for the 220 yesterday afternoon as his team lost to the Crimson, 59 to 16, but his performance was the only real competition furnished by the Gymnasts.

Finishing with a fine last lap that left him nine-tenths of a second ahead of Harvard's Frannie Powers, the Springfield natator hung up a record of 2:18:8 for the furlong, best ever made in the league compromising the smaller colleges such as Amherst, Brown, Wesleyan, and Williams. Powers swam a strong race all the way, but Rawstrom's final surge carried him half a body's length ahead to win. Powers' time (unofficial), 2:19:7, was exactly the same as his clocking in the Freshman meet against Yale last year.

Eric Cutler beat Rawstrom in the 440 in the good time of 5:09.3, but the Gymnast tankman was obviously spent from his 220 effort and failed to provide as close a race as was expected. However, Cutler swam a heady race, lagging a body's length behind Rawstrom during the first 100, then gradually pulling away from him.

The rest of the meet was decidedly one-sided. Crimson swimmers swept the firsts and seconds in four other events and won both relays decisively. Max Kraus and Jack Waldron finished one-two in the 220 breastroke but Max was disqualified for an illegal turn--touching the wall with one hand only, so Waldron was declared the actual winner. Kraus's unofficial time was 2:40, while Waldron was three secords slower.

Coach Ulen concentrated on swimming his best men in the early events to clinch the meet, later giving opportunities to his reserves to gain meet experience. Ned Goldwasser, plucky Junior, swam his best 100's when he won the 100 free-style in 57.6 and anchored the 400 relay in 58.2.

Craig Moore took seconds in the 50, and in the backstroke to complete a good day's work, while Lonnie Stowell won the 50 in the indifferent time of 24.9, in his first Varsity competition.

Saturday, the Ulenmen tackle Cornell at 8:30 o'clock preceded by the Freshmen versus M. I. T. at 7:30.
