"Our sociology department has at last gained supremacy over its two traditional rivals, Chicago and Columbia, and now leads the country," Carle C. Zimmerman, associate professor of Sociology, declared yesterday.
This statement came as the result of an invitation from the American Sociological Society asking Harvard to give its first dinner at Philadelphia. Formerly the invitation had been issued only to Chicago or Columbia.
These dinners are always important to the department from an academic point of view since they often offer scholarships to students at the recommendation of professors from other colleges.
Since this is the sociology department's first attempt at staging this function, it is necessarily experimental, Zimmerman declared. If the results are unsatisfactory it is highly probable that the college will decline to do it again if asked.
