Middlebury Skiers Edge Out Harvard in Placid Tourney

Ames Stars for Crimson; Jackson Cabin Holds 15 Throughout Holidays

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Harvard skiers were widely separated this Christmas vacation, with snow conditions only good in scattered parts of New England. The ski team entered its first meet of the year at Lake Placid, New York, and showed that it has a bright future by placing second, close behind the expert Middlebury squad.

Yale barely nosed out Williams for third place in the field of 12 colleges. Competition was close throughout the whole meet, but Eddie Gignac, diminutive all-around Kanone from the Black Panther squad, was far above the rest of the boys in winning the Ski Moister trophy, awarded to the best four-event skier.

Freshman Del Ames turned in a topnotch performance for Harvard by coming in third in the near-shuss downhill race on Mount Joe, and third also in the gruelling 14 kilometer cross country, besides doing well in slalom and jump.

New Cabin Is Open

The New Cabin at Jackson, New Hampshire, received its christening during the past two weeks at 15 members of the Ski Club used it for a base of operations, driving over to Cannon Mountain when the snow was bad in the Pinkham region. Herman Ostermeyer, instructor at the Eastern Slope school, acted as unofficial coach and gave pointers to the boys as they needed them.

The cabin was in the charge of Malcolm McNair '42, who reports that all the arrangements turned out very satisfactorily. The price for food was fixed to one dollar a day, including a made-up lunch, and a cook was engaged to get supper ready since the boys were content to sit around the fire after a strenuous day.

Harvard Race Postponed

Since snow conditions on the Sherburne trail are only fair, the annual Harvard race, which was to have been held this week-end, has been called off for the present and may be held at a later date.

The team at Placid:

Tom Winship '42,Dick Whittemore '40, Lloyd Butterfield '40, Del Ames '43, BILL Thurston '42, Herbert Weiner '43, Roger Wilson '43.
