Democracies in South America Total Four

Haring States Other Nations Have Modified Dictatorships

Discussing the political and social aspects of South America, Professor Clarence H. Haring '07 said last night that there are only four true democracies in South America--Chile, Argentina, Uraguay, and Colombia.

The rest of the states have various types of totalitarian political regime, which vary greatly in the extent to which they have departed from the principles of democracy. Professor Haring stated.

The point was illustrated by the fact that "in 1933 when Roosevelt was at a peace conference and mentioned defense of democracy in the western hemisphere, it brought out smiles on the faces of the South American representatives."

At present Professor Haring is lecturing on Mexico. He will start on his eighth trip to South America next January.
