Gottlieb Resigns As Student Union Head

Split Between "Full Aid" and Anti-Intervention Groups Is Inevitable

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

With the resignation last night of Alan Gottlieb '41 as president of the Student Union, the long predicted split between the "full aid" and the "Anti-intervention" factions of the Union was made inevitable.

Whether Gottlieb carries tomorrow's policy meeting or not, he will take all those voting for him out of the American Student and form an organization to be known as the Harvard Progressive Union. Leo Marx '41 and Robert Stange '41 will continue to run the Student Union as it now exists on an anti-conscription, anti-aid platform.

Gottlieb Statement

Gottlieb's statement upon tendering his resignation to the Executive Committee follows: "I have resigned from the presidency of the HSU because of a fundamental disagreement with the program.

"It is my intention to present the Harvard Student Union with a progressive platform based upon fighting for a better democracy at home, material aid to Britain, and the re-election of President Roosevelt. I plan to seek again the presidency of the organization if the majority of the members share my outlook."

The executive committee of the HSU, in accepting Gottlieb's resignation, said, "We regret that we feel forced to accept Alan Gottlieb's resignation from the presidency. The program adopted by the membership of the Student Union calls for opposition to any aid to the belligerents as a fundamental plank in its anti-war program, and we cannot but feel that Gottlieb's advocacy of aid to Great Britain and support of the Administration's program is in contradiction with our desire to keep the Student Union an anti-war organization."
